Scientists from Italy, the worst affected country from COVID-19 in Europe, claimed to have developed first COVID-19 vaccine. The announcement came hours after Israel’s claim of isolating antibody of coronavirus. A team of Italian scientists from Takis (Biotechnology Company), claimed development of couple of vaccines, which can control and neutralize the coronavirus and works on Humans.
The tests were conducted at Lazzaro Spallanzani National Institute for Infectious Diseases in Rome on mice, which developed antibodies that blocked the coronvirus from infecting other cells. The antibodies developed in mice were isolated. The researchers said the five vaccine candidates generated a large number of antibodies and two best results were selected for report. All of the vaccine candidates currently being developed are based on the genetic material of DNA protein "spike".
Luigi Aurisicchio, CEO of Takis said “This is the most advanced stage of testing of a candidate vaccine created in Italy. He further added that “Human tests are expected after this summer”.
Dr Emanuele Marra from Takis in conversation to CNBC TV 18 said that, “so far, the immunity generated by most of our five vaccine candidates has an effect on the virus. We expect better results after the second vaccination. The vaccine candidates could adapt to any Covid-19 evolution and its possible mutations".
Earlier on May 5, 2020, Israel’s defence minister announced that, scientists at Israel Institute of Biological Research (IIBR) have been able to isolate the coronavirus antibody. The antibody attacks the virus in a monoclonal way and can neutralize it within the bodies of those, who are ill. Israel’s Defence Minister, Naftali Bennett called it a significant breakthrough.
A statement from the defence ministry office said, that the IIBR has completed the development phase and is in process of patenting the development. Researchers are already in talk with international manufacturers, including an Indian firm, to mass produce the vaccine. However it did not specified, whether the vaccine’s human trial has been conducted or not.
The labs at IIBR, supervised by the Prime Minister’s office were given the task of developing a vaccine for the pandemic which has wrecked havoc in the world since inception of 2020.
Mr. Bennett said that, “I am proud of the institute staff for this terrific breakthrough, their creativity and the Jewish mind brought about this amazing achievement”.
The statement said that 5 virus samples from several countries including Japan and Italy arrived in Israel. These samples were kept frozen at -80 degree Celsius at the IIBR, and researchers worked out on development of the vaccine.
There are hundreds of vaccines in experimental and trial stages all over the world, in order to curb the COVID-19 menace. However the development from Italian scientists might be the most progressive result towards an effective vaccine for COVID-19. Recently, there are several reports of positive developments regarding the vaccine hunt, which indicates that we are near to get a vaccine very soon.
