COVID-19 the disease caused by Novel Corona Virus (SARS COV-2) has forced not only people to lockdown but sports also. The disease declared as Pandemic by WHO has infected over 600000 people globally and caused over 31000 fatalities as of March 29, 2020. It has led to widespread Lockdowns globally impacting every sector.

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted sports industry globally. Many sports events and tournaments have been either postponed or stand cancelled due to the pandemic that originated from Wuhan, China. Some major events affected are Tokyo Summer Olympics 2020, 2020 Arctic Winter games, ASEAN Para Games 2020, 2022 FIFA world cup qualifications etc. Here we will discuss major sports events affected by COVID-19.
1. Summer Olympics 2020 - Tokyo
The Tokyo Summer Olympics 2020 scheduled to start on 24 July 2020 have been postponed till summer 2021 due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
London-bases Olympic qualifiers postponed until later this year and British Boxing Board of Control has suspended all events until the end of April.
BCCI has suspended the cash rich Indian Premier League (IPL) till April 15, 2020 amid the COVID-19 outbreak. ECB has suspended all professional Cricket till May 28. CSA has cancelled all forms of Cricket for 60 days.
Euro 2020 has been postponed till summer of 2021, UEFA Under-21 European championship, The Copa America 2020,The Women’s Super League and FA Women’s Championship were also postponed.
UEFA has postponed all Champions League and Europa League fixtures
The 2020 Masters has been postponed and the PGA tour has cancelled the Players Championship after the first round on March 13.
NHL has paused its 2019-20 season with effect from March 12. 2020 Euro Hockey league women season were suspended and 2020 Men’s Euro Hockey club trophy I and II tournaments were cancelled. 2020 Men’s and Women’s Hockey Junior Asia cup, 2020 Women’s Asian Champions Trophy, Sultan Azlan Shah cup have been postponed.
Major league Baseball (MLB) has suspended the 2020 season at least till mid May.
NBA has suspended its regular season indefinitely. NCAA has also cancelled the 2020 Division I men’s and women’s basketball tournaments along with all other winter season championship events. ASEAN basketball league has also been suspended indefinitely.
The 44th Chess Olympiad scheduled to take place from 5–17 August 2020 was postponed and rescheduled for the summer of 2021.
The 2020 Archery World cup has been postponed.
The 2020 Snooker Championship has been postponed.
The Australian/New Zealand National Rugby League has been suspended and if it cannot be restarted by 1 September, 2020, it will be abandoned with no premiership awarded.
The 2020 ISSF World Cup has been postponed.
The ATP tour and ATP challenger tour have been suspended till 8 June. The French Open 2020 has been postponed to September 20 - October 4, 2020
15. Table Tennis
The 2020 World Team Table Tennis Championships have been postponed to 21-28 June, 2020. The 2020 ITTF-ATTU Asian cup was postponed until later in the year.
Almost all the sports have been affected by the Novel Corona Virus Outbreak. The effect of COVID-19 pandemic on sports is beyond any expectations. The whole world is fighting with the worst pandemic in the century. We request you to be at home and stay safe.
