When the entire world is dealing with shortages of essential equipment for front line officials and health care workers and medical staff, Indian Railways has stood up to the expectations by producing record number of masks and sanitizers in a very short period of time. As the data stands on 1st April 2020, Indian Railways has produced 2,87,704 masks and 25,806 litres of sanitizers.
In a press release to PIB, Indian Railways informed that great efforts are being mounted by Indian Railways to combat the crisis of COVID-19 which saw a 21-days lockdown in the country. All in-house units like Zonal Railways, Production Units and PSUs associated are carrying out the task at hand on war footing. Minister of Railways and Commerce & Industry Shri Piyush Goyal, MoS (Railways), informed that he himself has taken various reviews on the ongoing situation and made sure effective and comprehensive measures are taken by Indian Railways.

As reported by PIB, the Central Railway zone leads by producing 22,580 masks and 2,693 litres of sanitizer, while the Western Railways has produced 46,313 no. of masks and 700 litres of sanitizer. The North Central Railway zone manufactured 26,567 masks and 3,100 litres of sanitizer followed by Eastern Railway with 14,800masks and 2,620 litres of sanitizer.5000 isolation beds and 11000 quarantine beds across all railway hospitals have already been prepared for isolating COVID-19 patients. On top of that 5000 train coaches have been converted into make shift hospitals having a total capacity of around 80000 beds in case of emergencies.

The busiest IRCTC may not be booking tickets now, but the responsibilities have only increased. The base kitchens at IRCTC have served 2.25 lakh meals across the nation since the lockdown was declared. The Railways Police Force (RPF) personnel are working days and nights to provide food to poor and needy.
