How to disable update in Windows 10

Windows 10 is the latest operating system from Microsoft, it comes with lots of features and tools to enhance user experience. However some of these features, despite being important may be annoying sometimes, one such feature is Automatic update in Windows 10. These updates are important to keep our system updated with latest features and security tools. However this feature may disrupt your tasks as system will need restarts to install the updates frequently. Also when you are on WiFi network


There are several methods to disable updates in Windows 10, these are as:

  • Disable automatic updates using Services
  • Disable automatic updates using Group Policy
  • Disable automatic updates using Registry

Since the third method is risky so we will discuss first two methods to stop automatic updates in Windows 10.

  1. How to disable update in Windows 10 using Windows Update Service
  2. This method is very easy and safe to use. All you need to do is to disable Windows update service. This can be done by:

    1. Press Windows + R (to open run command)
    2. Type “services.msc” and press Enter key

    4. Scroll to “Windows update” > Right click >select Properties
    5. Under General tab, go to Startup type > select Disabled

    7. Click apply and OK.

    Also you can stop the services if it is still running in the same tab mentioned above. This will completely stop updates in Windows 10.

  3. How to disable automatic update in Windows 10 using Group Policy editor

The Group Policy editor feature is available only in Windows 10 Professional, Enterprise, or education editions, but not available in Home edition of Windows 10. The following steps can be used to disable Windows 10 update using Group Policy editor.

  1. Open run command (Windows +R)
  2. Type “gpedit.msc” and press Enter.
  3. Select “Computer Configurations
  4. Go to Administrative Templates > Windows Components
  5. Select Windows Update > Configure Automatic updates
  6. Select Disabled > Apply and click OK.


If you to download any update, you can enable the update by above steps and selecting “Enabled”.
