No Community Transmission yet, maintains Ministry of Health in a joint press briefing on COVID-19

Lav Aggarwal, Joint Secretary, Union Health Ministry said that the country is still in the local transmission phase. There are no signs of community transmission yet. A significant 80 percent cases have been treated at symptomatic stages itself. As and when there will be any such alert, Ministry will come forward and inform regarding the same. There is no need to create panic due to such speculations and the need of the hour is to be alert against the deadly COVID-19 disease.

The country has currently 942 active cases, out of those 29 have been casualties and 99 recovered. Around 92 cases are reported in last 24 hours. The Ministry also informed that 115 government testing facilities across India are now fully operational. An attempt has also been made to include 47 private labs, that have also been made functional. R Gangakhedkar, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said that including 1334 people tested in private labs, a total number of 3501 people have been tested in the last 42 hrs. So far 38,402 people have been tested till now as the data stands on March 30.

We have 3.34 lakh PPEs in all hospitals across the nation and 60,000 PPE kits have been procured and will be supplied wherever necessary. Attempts are being made to buy kits from a company from Singapore for providing 10 lakh PPE kits. A Korean company with partnership from Vietnam has also agreed to supply a lakh PPE kits. Indigenous Indian manufacturers like Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Agva Healthcare have taken orders to supply 40000 ventilators. Orders for 21 lakh PPE kits have been placed with 11 domestic manufacturers across the country. DRDO, with help of Make in India companies, is producing 20000 N-99 and N-95 masks per day.

“Home Secretary has directed States/UTs to direct District Magistrates & Superintendents of Police to ensure food & shelter for stranded workers & full wages by employer and to ensure that landlords don't ask for rent from labourers”, said PS Srivastava, MHA. All sorts of religious congregation during the lockdown is illegal and is punishable by law. The numbers have taken 12 days to reach from 100 to 1000.

The ministry has maintained the situation is being properly monitored and required actions are being taken in terms of containment strategies. The government at the centre and states are collaborating with each other at highest levels to ensure lockdown is implemented properly. The ministry assured that 100 percent compliance is essential and even hostels and national training institutes of ministry of skill development are being converted in to quarantine facilities. Apart from that, a lakh personnel from different ministries will work on ground to meet different needs.

Reverberating what Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “Evam Evam Vikar, api  tarunha Saadhyate Sukham” i.e. an illness should be nipped in the bud itself before letting it grow bigger, the officials at Ministry maintained that it is alert and preparedness instead of panic and proper implementation of lockdown that will save us from the clarion curse of COVID-19.
